Squash Blossom Pizza
Bright orange squash blossoms taste wonderful in this seasonal summer pizza
This squash blossom pizza was inspired by a trip to a local community garden that had a huge open compost pile covered entirely by squash plants. The plants were flourishing in the nutrient rich compost and it reminded me that community gardening is always full of surprises. The abundance of squash flowers and an intense craving for pizza led to this recipe.
If you are harvesting your own squash blossoms, it is important to pick the male flowers to encourage the plant to produce fruit (squash) instead of more flowers. If they haven’t been removed already, be sure to take out the stamen, the thick center stem coated in pollen, this can make the blossoms bitter.
Ready to bake pizza dough is an awesome resource and ingredient to have at hand in the kitchen. It makes for such a quick meal when you’re struggling to put things together. After taking your dough out, don’t let it defrost too long before sticking it in the oven.
Get creative with the herb seasoning. The spices used in this pizza are merely suggestions to highlight the flavor of the squash blossoms and parsley. Feel free to add whatever herbs you would like to dress your pizza dough with. The same goes for the cheese. This is a vegan recipe, but if you only have regular cheese at hand, that would work as well. Sprinkle the cheese over the pizza right before baking.
Make this pizza for lunch during a lazy summer weekend or as a quick weeknight meal.
